It is recommended that at least one person in your organisation is a 'designated safeguarding officer' (DSO). This person will take the lead on safeguarding for your organisation.

Section 11 of the Children Act 2004 places duties on a range of organisations and individuals to ensure their functions, and any services they contract out to others, are discharged having regard to the need to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

Nominating someone to undertake the role may be the first task your group should consider. We also recommend a deputy is appointed to cover sickness or leave.

The person chosen should:

be someone with authority in the group such as a manager or team leader
a paid member of staff if possible
have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
have at least two references which are followed up.

The Designated Safeguarding Officer has a responsibility at both a strategic level within the organisation and on a day to day basis. The role of DSO is extremely important as they role model for, and support the rest of the organisation.  DSO’s have told us the role can be quite a lonely one where they feel a weight of responsibility amongst confusion about what the role entails.

This course clarifies the role of designated safeguarding officers, for voluntary and community organisations within Bradford District, who are working with children and young people. The course helps build confidence and competence in carrying out the role and will cover:

Course Objectives

the role and main responsibilities of the designated safeguarding officer
describe the key legislation and guidance that determines your organisation’s policy
decide what steps your organisation needs to take
identify the barriers that prevent people from reporting abuse
know how to respond effectively to someone who does report abuse
understand the process should a staff member/volunteer be accused of abuse
develop an awareness of the emotional impact of safeguarding
identify a network for personal support
talk about your organisation’s overarching policy and procedures

The course will be delivered by Taye Training and will be tailored for those working in Bradford Metropolitan District.
